number thirteen

No. 1 ranked Serena Williams stays on top by winning her fourth Wimbledon title, increasing her Grand Slam total to thirteen. Her opponent this time was No. 21-ranked Vera Zvonavera of Russia.

Williams won 6-3, 6-2 and never lost a single set in two dominating weeks of tennis.

She is entering the time of her career where her only competition is history. Her 13th Grand Slam title pushed her ahead of mentor Billie Jean King for sixth place all-time.

All-Time Major Tournament Wins:
  1. Margaret Smith Court, 24
  2. Steffi Graf, 22
  3. Helen Willis Moody, 19
  4. Martina Navratilova, 18
  5. Chris Evert, 18
  6. Serena Williams, 13
Wins aside, is Serena the greatest female tennis player of all-time?

Martina Navratilova's reply, courtesy of ESPN:

"Top five," answered Navratilova, without a moment's hesitation. "It's not just about how many Slams you win or how many tournaments you win -- it's just your game overall. And she's definitely got all the goods. It would have been fun to play her, but at the same time, I'm glad that I didn't have to."
