k-k-karma!

Don't tell anyone, but Jay Mariotti just got arrested for assaulting his girlfriend.

Yeah, the sportswriter on ESPN's Around the Horn.

Right, the douchebag…not Woody Paige

The Examiner added this to their article:
Mariotti is known for his sports talk on ESPN and was also one of Tiger Woods' biggest supporters when it was rumored Tiger may have been abusive to wife Elin.
(translation: should've seen it coming)

Also, it wouldn't be right if Chad Ochocinco didn't add his two cents:

Actually, the fact whether Chad is 'aight' or not is highly questionable.

tra thomas announces retirement

Pro Bowl left tackle Tra Thomas to retire after the effects of arthroscopic knee surgery causing a decline with his performance during camp:

"I was just watching film and I don't think I was playing as well in practice as I should be," said Thomas, who entered the NFL as a first-round pick of Philadelphia in 1998. "If I'm not playing well in practice, I'm not going to play up to my standard in a game ... I feel very good about the decision. I 'm going out on my own terms. At least, I know I gave it everything I could."

During Dolphins' practice, Brandon Marshall punted a ball over the fence out of frustration after he dropped a short pass in the endzone.

favre x vikings: the sequel

Favre returns for his 20th season in the NFL.

Favre on last year's NFC Championship game:

“As we were driving on that last drive it seemed like it was destiny—for us,” said Favre, whose interception in the final minute ended that march and the Vikings never got the ball in overtime. “I was so close, so close to getting these guys to the Super Bowl."
“I owe it to this organization to give it one more try.”

when a play goes wrong

carmelo to leave denver

Anthony's hesitation to sign a three-year, $65 million extension with the Nuggets goes beyond his desire to enjoy the major-market exposure and pressure that LeBron James and Dwyane Wade turned down this summer. Melo would accept other destinations as well, and the Magic are believed to be at the top of his list along with the Knicks, according to a person familiar with his strategy.
The exit strategy began taking shape last week, while Anthony was in New York for Nike's World Basketball Festival. It was then, according to the source, that Nuggets management was advised to begin exploring trade possibilities for Anthony to avoid losing him as a free agent and getting nothing in return. When Denver fills its vacant GM position, the likely choice, former Suns executive David Griffin, will inherit a crisis similar to the one he endured with Amar'e Stoudemire, who left the Suns for a five-year, $99.9 million deal with the Knicks.

my popcorn is getting stale

Maybe it's just his show on VH1 distorting my views and opinions, but this is getting ridiculous.

Can T.O. be so disruptive that teams would rather have Muhsin Muhammad on their roster than him?

kobe bryant shares america's favorite sports star

I'd understand if he had to share it with Derek Jeter or Peyton Manning.

But Tiger Woods!?!

Kobe got backlash for YEARS after the incident in Colorado and Tiger is still America's favorite!?

SMH.

This demographical comparison gives Kobe the win by default, by the way.

contract wars!

According to Chris Johnson's agent, the Tennessee Titans and the running back have agreed on a restructured deal that will ensure his participation in the team's upcoming training camp.

Most people are aware of CJ running for 2,000+ yards in 2009, making him the sixth member of the club and also broke the NFL yards from scrimmage record. His season was so groundbreaking that he has  quite possibly eclipsed the Vikings' Adrian Peterson as the best running back in the league. This is the same player who was projected to make $550,000 this year and less than his back-up, Alvin Pearman.

I know NFL teams can't increase a player's base salary by any more than 30% and I also realize that there have been so many bad contracts handed out that the "right" thing to do is to simply play out the initial contract that was awarded, but this may be one of the rare instances that it should be permissible.

money to joe

Hawks v Bucks 02Image via Wikipedia
Joe Johnson bluffed the Atlanta Hawks right into a max contract (6 years, $119 million) after claiming other teams as his primary choices in free agency.

To each his own, I guess.

Maybe the Hawks have short-term memory because that sweep in the second-round was almost as ugly as the fan reaction when he said he could care less if they supported his team. They responded with quite the amount of ether.

Now, the Atlanta fans will be irate when his team needs him to earn this monumental contract with the implications that he's going to perform consistently at a superstar's level, and he doesn't.

Can't be mad at Joe for knowing exactly how to play the game when it comes to increase that paycheck despite the hate.

The question is going to be how long can Atlanta hold on to his contract before they trade him to:

A. Please their fans.
B. Rebuild their team after a number of future exits in the first round of the playoffs.
C. Both A. and B.

Honestly, if you ever wondered why some franchises are always seemingly successful in their respective sports, these are the type of bad decisions that allow them to do so

SMH #1

From the SMH Files:

National Enquirer, of course, was the source of this. I wouldn't say the outside world despises him, though.

I wasn't sure whether to be disgusted by this or simply applaud it. I'm sure Fred Goldman never envisioned this as the prison punishment for  O.J. Simpson. They love him there.

Michael Vick will not be released by the Philadelphia Eagles despite rumors that have been deflected in a statement issued Saturday.

"Bad judgment" seems to be the phrase associated with the Eagles quarterback when given the reasoning behind his participation, or lack thereof, with the shooting that occurred at his birthday bash on June 15.

number thirteen

No. 1 ranked Serena Williams stays on top by winning her fourth Wimbledon title, increasing her Grand Slam total to thirteen. Her opponent this time was No. 21-ranked Vera Zvonavera of Russia.

Williams won 6-3, 6-2 and never lost a single set in two dominating weeks of tennis.

She is entering the time of her career where her only competition is history. Her 13th Grand Slam title pushed her ahead of mentor Billie Jean King for sixth place all-time.

All-Time Major Tournament Wins:
  1. Margaret Smith Court, 24
  2. Steffi Graf, 22
  3. Helen Willis Moody, 19
  4. Martina Navratilova, 18
  5. Chris Evert, 18
  6. Serena Williams, 13
Wins aside, is Serena the greatest female tennis player of all-time?

Martina Navratilova's reply, courtesy of ESPN:

"Top five," answered Navratilova, without a moment's hesitation. "It's not just about how many Slams you win or how many tournaments you win -- it's just your game overall. And she's definitely got all the goods. It would have been fun to play her, but at the same time, I'm glad that I didn't have to."

employee discounts

Dirk Nowitzki and the Mavericks agree to a deal worth $80 million over four years, including a no-trade clause.

Paul Pierce and the Celtics agree to a deal worth $61 million over four years.

Both players do not take the maximum to leave room for the greater good of their respective teams. The Mavs hope to land a viable sidekick for Dirk and the Celts hope to re-sign Ray Allen.

Good days for Dallas and Boston. Can't wait for these jerseys to hang in the rafters.

north korea LOST

That's not even the worst part.

It was actually broadcast live in their country for once! That communism karma is ruthless.

North Korean's Jon Tae-Se's two goals was very impressive against Greece, though it may be the highlight of their performance as a team unfortunately.

From: North Korea World Cup Team Blog

Well, that was bad.

I agree. That was mass destruction.

iverson wants to return

Allen Iverson's personal manager Gary Moore says his client is planning a return to the NBA.

This is going to be awkward.

Moore is seemingly going to have to break the bad news to Iverson when he'll ultimately advise him to play in China instead. Good luck with that, Gary. Maury Povich is your backup if you feel too pressured to tell him.

Why do I get the feeling a team is going to sign him anyway?

when off-season activities go wrong...

From NY Daily News:

Steve Smith of the Carolina Panthers is used to taking a beating. He's a receiver in the NFL, so getting banged around on the gridiron is a normal day at the office. You would think he'd be okay playing a game of flag football, where there's a lot less contact.

Smith didn't come out of the flag football game at his camp for kids okay, though.

"They were messing around, the ball went over his head and he slipped," Smith's agent, Derrick Fox told the Associated Press on Monday. "He put his arm out to brace himself. When he did, he felt a sharp pain."

The 31-year-old receiver broke his left forearm, and may miss most of training camp.

X-rays taken Sunday showed a break, and Smith went under the knife later that day, where doctors put a plate and screws in his arm, which was broken at the end of last season. Fox says that the break is in a different spot.

There is no nerve damage in the arm. Smith is expected to make a full recovery. He could return by the halfway mark of training camp, but the team is hoping he'll be ready for their opener against the Giants at New Meadowlands Stadium on Sept. 12.

Tough break, Stevonne. I'll attend your stiff arm's funeral, however. The good always die young.

mcgrady alongside kobe?

courtesy of Bleacher Report:

Tracy McGrady, a perennial All-Star and two-time NBA Scoring champion, has undergone a significant hit to his reputation after failed stints in Toronto, Orlando, and Houston. To date, McGrady has not gone past the first-round in the NBA playoffs.

After having battled various knee and back injuries in the past couple years, Tracy McGrady has been working himself back into shape under the strenuous regimen of esteemed athletic trainer Tim Grover. Now that he has finished his physical rehabilitation program, McGrady is
feeling rejuvenated enough to make a return in the 2010-2011 NBA season.

Despite having limited intentions to use the Mid-Level Exception this
summer, Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak would consider pulling the trigger on the seven-time All-Star swingman should he accept a paycut at the MLE. Ron Artest, the defensive-minded role player who played a huge factor in this year's Lakers-Celtics NBA Finals, has reached out to McGrady to "end his career as a champion."

The Lakers are willing to explore a potential reunion of former Houston teammates Ron Artest and Tracy McGrady once the July 1 free agency begins.

In Los Angeles, Tracy McGrady would be asked to come off the bench as a role player, similar to what Lakers' forward Lamar Odom has done in the past two seasons. McGrady would provide the Lakers' bench unit with some offensive firepower and stability, and be another deadly weapon in the already loaded Lakers' arsenal.

Most importantly, the acquisition of Tracy McGrady would address the important need for a secondary slasher besides Kobe Bryant. As advocated by Laker great Jerry West, "I think they do need some changes. If you look, they have some free agents that are coming up but the
thing that would most concern me is I think they need someone else other than Kobe Bryant getting in the lane."

As expressed by one high-ranked official within the Lakers' management, should Tracy McGrady not return to the New York Knicks next season or spurn retirement, "expect the deal to get done by end of July.

Note to Tracy:
You can't let this happen. The truth made me spit out my drink, not the Photoshop.
You can still lose your virginity. Follow Ron.

manute bol (1962-2010)

"He ... was continually giving of himself through his generosity and humanitarian efforts in order to make the world around him a much better place, for which he will always be remembered." - Philadelphia 76ers president Ed Stefanski

why ron artest had a better day than you

I don't know what was better about Artest's Game 7 showcase of manliness, humility and swag. Was it the dagger 3 that Paul Pierce practically dared him to take? Maybe the kisses blown to the crowd interrupted by his barking of defensive assignments to his lesser teammates? Could it be that he destroyed a franchise and delivered a championship to another? Should i even mention the post-game interview?

Nah.

Here's to the rest of American youth thanking their hood following moments of grandeur.

And to think, Coach Zen didn't even want him too shoot. Did our bipolar hero listen?

Nah.
